I am Godwin Mayaki, a climate writer, sustainability advocate, and the founder of Climate Change Writers, a global community of writers using the power of words to advance climate awareness and action.
My involvement in climate writing grew from a conviction that the climate crisis is not only a scientific or environmental issue. It is also a communication challenge. People need to understand what climate change means for their communities, livelihoods, economies, health, and future before meaningful action can take place.
In January 2022, I founded Climate Change Writers to create a space where writers from different backgrounds and parts of the world could contribute to the climate conversation. What began as an initiative has grown into a global community of more than 4,000 writers from over 130 countries, united by an interest in telling better climate stories and making climate information more accessible.
Through my writing, I explore climate change, sustainability, environmental responsibility, climate policy, green development, and the human dimensions of the climate crisis. I am particularly interested in African perspectives, because Africa's climate realities are often discussed without giving enough attention to the voices, experiences, and solutions emerging from the continent itself.
I see writing as more than a way of informing people. It is a way of shaping how we understand a problem, whose voices we hear, and what possibilities we imagine. My work therefore focuses not only on communicating the urgency of climate change, but also on documenting solutions, encouraging participation, and helping more people see themselves as part of the response.
My broader work in sustainability includes Green Mentorship and other initiatives focused on building capacity, creating pathways into green careers, and supporting a generation of people who can contribute meaningfully to the transition towards a more sustainable future.
