Privacy
Effective 5 September 2026. The previous version said we used no web beacons anywhere. That is still true of every page on this site, and is no longer true of copies republished elsewhere, which is explained under Republication below.
This site is operated by TeraShift Sustainability Initiative, RC8960199, Abuja, Nigeria, which is the data controller. Climate Change Writers is an initiative of TeraShift.
The short version
We collect your name, email address and country when you join, and whatever you choose to add afterwards. We use it to run the site and to send you the messages you have asked for. We do not sell it, we do not profile you, and no other company learns that you were here.
What we collect
When you register: your name, your email address, the country you select from the list, and the IP address you registered from. Your password is stored only as a hash and cannot be read by anyone here, including us.
If you choose to add them: a pen name, a biography, and your privacy settings.
As a result of using the site: what you write, when you signed in last, which groups you joined, what you follow.
For security: a log of sign ins, password resets, permission refusals and administrative actions, each with the IP address involved. Those entries are deleted after two years.
What we do not do
This section describes the site as built, and it is enforced by the browser through a Content Security Policy rather than only promised here.
- No analytics. Not Google Analytics, not any other.
- No third party requests at all. The site loads no fonts, scripts, stylesheets or images from anywhere else. Your browser talks to this domain and to nothing else, so no advertising network, social platform or analytics company learns that you visited.
- No advertising, no sponsored content, no affiliate links.
- No tracking pixels or web beacons on this site, and none in email. There is one in articles republished on other sites, which is described under Republication. It is never on a page here.
- No location tracking. Country is a value you pick. We never ask your device for its location and never derive one from your address.
- No profiling. Nothing here is personalised to your interests. Every visitor sees the same homepage.
- No data bought from anyone.
- No marketing email. There is no newsletter.
Republication
Articles here may be republished by other sites, free of charge, with credit and a link back. Where a writer has allowed it, we offer the piece ready to paste, and that copy ends with a single transparent image one pixel square pointing back to this domain.
What it records. When that image loads on another site, we store the domain name of the page it loaded on and add one to a count. That is all we keep: a domain and a number.
What it does not do. It sets no cookie. It carries no identifier. It cannot tell one reader from another, cannot follow anyone between sites, and is not shared with anybody. We do not record the address of the page, only the domain, so which article you were reading on that site is not stored.
Why it exists. It is how a writer here finds out their piece was carried by a newspaper in another country. Without it the work travels and nobody who wrote it ever knows.
Removing it. Any site republishing a piece may delete the image. The licence still applies in full and nothing is withheld for doing so. The republication page says this in the same words.
If you are reading this on another site, that request reaches our web server the way any image request does, so your IP address appears in the ordinary server access log kept by our host. We do not read those logs for this purpose, do not copy anything out of them, and do not join them to the count. The only thing we store ourselves is the domain name and the number.
Cookies
One, holding a session identifier, so that signing in keeps you signed in. If you tick "keep me signed in" there is a second, which you can revoke and which is destroyed when you change your password or sign out.
No analytics cookies, no advertising cookies, and no third party cookies, because no third party is contacted.
Photographs you upload
Every image is re encoded rather than stored as you sent it. All embedded metadata is removed in the process, including GPS coordinates, camera serial numbers and timestamps. The original file is never served to anyone.
This matters if you file from somewhere that being placed would put you at risk.
Email we send
A confirmation when you join, and a link when you ask to reset your password. After that: decisions on your own writing, replies to threads you follow, notice of opportunities closing, and news that someone has followed you.
Each of those four is set separately to as it happens, a daily summary, a weekly summary, or never, on your email settings page. Every message carries a link back to that page.
What you control
Your privacy settings hold eight separate controls: your real name, your country, your biography, your email address, your published work, your group memberships, your posts, and who may message you. Each can be shown to anyone, to signed in members, to people you follow, or to nobody.
You can also remove yourself from the writers directory, which takes you out of search engine results for this site as well.
If you write under a pen name it replaces your real name everywhere, including in the address of your profile page.
Defaults are cautious: your email address is visible to nobody, and your country and group memberships only to signed in members.
Who else can see it
Our hosting provider, TrueHost Cloud, operates the server, the database and the outbound mail relay, and has the technical access that implies.
Nobody else. There is no analytics processor, no email marketing platform, no content delivery network and no error reporting service.
Editors and administrators here can see account details in order to run the site, and their access is recorded. An administrator cannot set your password: anyone who could would be able to sign in as you, and the record would then show you doing whatever they did.
We disclose information to legal authorities only where the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Published work stays in the archive. That is what the archive is for, and it is how your byline remains attached to what you wrote.
Security log entries are deleted after two years. Read notifications after ninety days. Session and reset tokens expire and are cleared automatically.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, correct anything wrong, object to how we use it, or ask us to delete your account. Write to reach@climatechangewriters.com and we will answer within thirty days.
If you ask us to delete your account, tell us what you want to happen to anything you published. We can remove your name from it or leave the byline in place, and we will do what you ask.
Changes
If we change this policy we will say so on the site and tell members by email before it takes effect.
