About us

Climate Change Writers wants to reach the world. We are writers from all over the planet, and our goal is to create awareness about the impact climate change is having on our lives, in ways that leave no details out.

We believe that only by doing this can we set things straight and prepare to use the world's resources in ways that are sustainable and efficient.

Our worldwide network of volunteer writers is the key to showing millions of people why there is no time left to deny what is in front of us. We no longer have time to fiddle with assumptions, or to argue with deniers. We need people everywhere putting the facts in plain sight.

Climate Change Writers is an initiative of TeraShift Sustainability Initiative, RC8960199, based in Abuja, Nigeria.

Our mission

To unite a global network of writers dedicated to telling the climate change narrative. We amplify the voices of those affected by climate change, communicate the urgency of the crisis, and press for action toward a sustainable and resilient future. Through our collective efforts we aim to build a movement that fosters awareness, understanding and meaningful change.

Our vision

A world where storytelling and the written word ignite a global movement that drives transformative action on climate change. We envisage a society where diverse perspectives converge into a full understanding of how humanity and the environment are bound together. By supporting writers we aim to shape narratives that change policy, influence public opinion and mobilise communities.

Our purpose

To harness the written word to bring about change. We are a community of writers united by a shared commitment to telling this story. By bringing together voices from around the world we raise awareness, prompt action, and build a collective understanding of how urgently sustainable solutions are needed. We work to empower individuals, organisations and policymakers to address the climate crisis together, and to leave a habitable planet for the generations that follow.

What we do

1. Publishing. A place to submit and be read. Members send reporting, essays and field notes; an editor reads everything and replies either way.
2. Weekly theme areas. Two focus areas each week, proposed by members and chosen by editors, so that in any given week the network is examining one question from many countries at once.
3. Collaboration across borders. Writers from different backgrounds and regions working on the same subject, which is the thing this network can do that a single publication cannot.
4. Working with organisations. Environmental groups, research institutes and climate-focused bodies, for information, interviews and shared resources.
5. Global reach. Actively seeking writers from countries and cultures that are under-represented in climate coverage.
6. Education and awareness. Workshops and sessions on climate literacy, and encouragement to ground every piece in accurate science.
7. Connecting writers with experts. Access to scientists and specialists so that what is published is accurate as well as readable.
8. Amplifying what works. Success stories from people, communities and organisations making a measurable difference.

What we believe

1. The threat is urgent. Climate change is an existential threat to the planet and to people. It needs action now, not consensus later.
2. Writing changes things. The creativity and persuasive power of writers can carry complex, pressing questions to audiences that scientific papers never reach.
3. Diversity is not decoration. A network of writers from many backgrounds and cultures produces understanding that a homogeneous one cannot. Different vantage points find different solutions.
4. Evidence first. We hold to scientific knowledge and evidence-based research. Writers are asked to engage with the findings, distil them into readable narrative, and close the gap between what is known and what is understood.
5. It intersects with everything. Climate change meets social, economic and environmental questions at every turn, and it falls hardest on those least able to absorb it. Our narratives say so.
6. Solutions, not despair. The crisis is severe and we do not soften that. But we look for the approaches, technologies and initiatives that offer a way through, because despair persuades nobody to act.
7. This is a global problem. It requires international dialogue and cooperation among writers, policymakers and everyone else. Amplifying different voices is how the bridges get built.

Who runs it

Climate Change Writers is convened by Godwin Mayaki, with a small team covering partnerships, community and advocacy. The writing itself comes from the members: researchers, students, farmers, teachers, engineers and campaigners across more than a hundred countries, none of whom are paid for it.

The environment is crumbling steadily. We cannot stay idly by. As members of the global human community who feel strongly about our home, we must take action however small. Writing could be the start. You can be that writer.

Membership is free and open to anyone, anywhere. There is no application, no fee and no minimum experience. Most of the people who write here are not journalists; they know something specific and are willing to explain it.
