In the village of Cherukanam, located in Kerala, there exists a remarkable tale of a group of young individuals who share a common objective: safeguarding their environment from pollution.
In the past, I used to embark on bicycle rides, both short and long, accompanied by my younger brother. On one particular evening, we ventured to Kuniyan Bridge, a renowned bird-watching spot where various migratory birds frequent. This area is known for its wetlands, and we spent an hour immersed in the splendor of nature, discussing the significance of observing our surroundings and respecting Mother Earth. Those moments hold great sentimental value, and we captured them through photographs before departing due to the lateness of the hour.
Upon returning to our local vicinity, Cherukanam, we encountered a group of individuals gathered in a circular arrangement. Initially, I presumed it to be a meeting, but it turned out to be a scheduled gathering where they discussed matters concerning their environment. Intrigued, my brother and I joined them. When it was my turn to contribute, I passionately spoke about our wetlands, endeavoring to emphasize their importance and leave a lasting impact. The participants eagerly engaged in conversation, raising questions about wetlands and whether certain areas near our river qualified as such. Their enthusiasm and interest in nature left me astonished, and I found satisfaction in addressing their queries and clarifying misconceptions regarding wetlands.
As the conversation unfolded, the discussion veered towards the topic of global warming, prompted by the sweltering conditions. I must confess, it was an unfamiliar experience for me. Following the discussion, we all introduced ourselves, and out of curiosity, I inquired why they were so dedicated to discussing nature when I hadn't witnessed any visible tree planting or conservation efforts. They didn't offer an extensive explanation, but Shyju and Bavith, who seemed to be leading the group, extended an invitation, suggesting that I join them the following morning or at my convenience.
The next day, I witnessed something truly astonishing. They were planting mangrove trees along the river. I was taken aback by this act of environmental preservation and carbon sequestration. What I observed was a community united in their efforts to protect the ecosystem. I learned that they didn't merely plant trees on June 5th, but rather, on each member's birthday, symbolizing shared responsibility for the growth and well-being of that particular tree. Additionally, they conducted awareness campaigns, in collaboration with a village library, to educate others about energy conservation.
The entire experience left me inspired and filled with admiration for these individuals who were spearheading this initiative. They serve as an example for others to follow, encouraging a shift towards greener practices and a more sustainable mindset
