Climate change is a business that excludes no one and young people are a major asset in the fight against climate change. Young people need to be agents of change in their communities.
Climate change is a business that excludes no one and young people are a major asset in the fight against climate change.
Young people need to be at the forefront in the fight against climate change in their communities, to ensure a livable planet for all, having informed knowledge and understanding will not be enough. A pedagogy adapted to the objective sought must be that of active engagement. An approach comprised of passive listening, sedentary engagement and rote learning will not foster the skills and mindset of participatory and proactive citizenship. Unfortunately, passive and sedentary pedagogies remain dominant in many classrooms in low-income countries.
Learning Modalities In Response To Climate Change; It is important to note that these learning modalities should not be designed simply to be used in theory but also in practice in the community primarily. Each modality has the potential to bring multiple knowledge, skills and learning outcomes of attitudes and dispositions;
Focus group sessions (in pairs, in small groups, reflection in small groups and with the whole group;
Mobile activities: move around to exchange or share information, collectively examine the material displayed or go to see presentations of each other's work and ideas; Social-emotional learning, sharing feelings about climate change and personal experiences related to disasters, articulate their hopes and fears for the future, perform empathy exercises in response to case studies and stories of people affected by disasters.
Learning through inquiry; investigating and learning through observation, polls, interviews and internet research, work on projects, analyze case studies. Substitute experiential learning; reviewing and responding to video and audio contributions; to play board games, role plays, using theatre, dance and song. Learning by doing in the field, by field visits to environmental protection areas; community surveys, visits to organic farms and nature reserves, visits to climate-related NGOs to learn more about their mandate, work and operation, risk mapping in schools and communities, interview community members, work with community teams.
Learning through action and activism; youth engagement in community resilience building projects, awareness campaigns in schools and communities on climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk reduction and environmental protection, speak on the local radio, opinion-forming through the use of traditional and social media, tree plantation, school gardening, remediation of the local environment.
These pedagogical approaches must be adapted in the developmental stage of the learners concerned. Local Efforts Implemented In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, In my community we teach young people about:
The use of renewable energies; Reduce waste, reuse objects and recycle them; Reduce electricity consumption;
Do the reforestation.
