Naledi Msomi

Naledi (Awande) Msomi is a passionate and driven Environmental and Water Science graduate from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. With a strong foundation in hydrogeological processes, water quality assessments, environmental management, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Naledi has cultivated a well-rounded skill set that merges scientific precision with practical environmental solutions. Her academic journey was underscored by her ability to balance her role as a committed student-athlete, representing UWC as a hockey player while excelling in her studies. This dual pursuit highlights her discipline, resilience, and ability to thrive in team-oriented and high-pressure environments.

Naledi’s educational background reflects a deep commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. She majored in areas critical to addressing South Africa’s environmental challenges, including surface and groundwater processes and quality assessments. Her passion for green living and sustainable design is not only evident in her academic focus but also in her ambition to create long-term environmental solutions that prioritize innovation and adaptability. Through her coursework and field experience, she developed key competencies in scientific writing, data analysis, and critical thinking—skills that are essential for driving environmental change.

In early 2025, Naledi served as a Research Volunteer with the Climate Change Writers South Africa team, where she contributed meaningfully to the organization's mission of advancing environmental awareness and action. Her role involved gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing data to support the development of content and initiatives aimed at educating the public and informing policy conversations. Her contributions helped strengthen the research foundation of the organization’s communications, allowing for more impactful storytelling and advocacy on climate issues affecting communities across South Africa and beyond.

Outside of her environmental pursuits, Naledi has demonstrated a consistent dedication to leadership and service. As a Student Sports Council Development Officer at UWC, she represented student-athletes’ interests, cultivated servant leadership qualities, and further developed her project management and problem-solving skills. With her interdisciplinary expertise, strong interpersonal capabilities, and unwavering passion for sustainability, Naledi Msomi stands out as a dynamic emerging voice in the environmental field—poised to make meaningful contributions to climate action and sustainable development in South Africa and beyond.
