Londeka Gumede

Londeka Gumede is a hydrogeologist and environmental consultant with a solid foundation in sustainability, contaminated land management, and groundwater science. Her professional journey spans both the mining and environmental sectors of South Africa, where she has contributed to projects involving groundwater and surface water sampling, environmental site assessments, and the development of health and safety protocols. With practical experience in both open-pit and underground mining environments, she has consistently applied a scientific and strategic approach to complex environmental challenges, including groundwater contamination and resource evaluation.

Holding a Master of Science degree in Hydrogeology from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, Londeka deepened her technical expertise in areas such as borehole design, contaminant transport modeling, and groundwater management. Her academic pursuit, backed by a Commonwealth Scholarship, equipped her with the skills to engage in research-driven environmental solutions. Her MSc independent project explored the application of remote sensing for groundwater supply investigations in Uganda, reflecting a commitment to integrating technology in addressing water-related challenges.

Before transitioning fully into the environmental consultancy space, Londeka managed agricultural operations as a small-scale sugarcane grower. This hands-on experience, especially during periods of drought, sparked her interest in alternative water sourcing and laid the foundation for her later specialization in hydrogeology. Her work at organisations like ERM and Umvoto has been marked by a commitment to compliance, sustainability, and impactful public engagement, including her contributions to global environmental awareness campaigns.

As a Partnership Sourcing Volunteer with the Climate Change Writers South Africa team, Londeka played a key role in advancing the organisation’s mission by identifying and fostering collaborative relationships with external stakeholders. Her background in sustainability and her strong communication skills proved invaluable in building bridges with organisations and individuals aligned with climate action. Her involvement added momentum to the team's outreach efforts and amplified their voice in environmental advocacy across the region.
